Michigan State slips past Ohio State in overtime

Redshirt freshman Kenny Kaminski nailed a three-pointer in the extra period (his third of the night) as Aaron Craft tried everything that he could muster to keep the Buckeyes undefeated.  But too much Michigan State firepower and a raucous crowd in East Lansing proved to be much on Tuesday night in the first ESPN Super Tuesday doubleheader of the year.

The 72-68 final score was not really indicative of how the game was played.  A 20-3 run by Ohio State pulled the Buckeyes to an even score at 58 after regulation time.

Keith Appling led the charge for Tom Izzo’s bunch leading all scorers with 20 points, shared the team rebounding ledger with 6, and compiling 7 assists.  Aaron Craft only scored 9 points while playing all 45 minutes in a losing cause.

Elsewhere in a very light schedule on Tuesday (and no, the arctic cold weather blanketing most of the right half of the country was not a factor):

Syracuse ran away from Virginia Tech on the road and won going away in Blacksburg, 72-52.  The Orange is one of only five unbeaten teams left in the nation.

In South Bend, North Carolina State used a big run after the Irish tied the score at 54 during the second half.  T.J. Warren led the charge with 17, while Anthony ”Cat” Barber ran up 16 points, Desmond Lee and Ralston Turner added 12 each for the Wolfpack while the bench outscored the reserves 23-9.

Garrick Sherman led the Irish with 21 points and a career-high 18 rebounds, Pat Connaughton had 15 and Eric Atkins tabbed 14 as Notre Dame fell by a score of 77-70.

Cincinnati continues to impress, barely squeaking by in Houston 61-60.  Finally, Kansas State and Iowa State roll to comfortable wins, KSU winning 65-47 at TCU while the Cyclones played with more than house money outscoring Baylor 47-34 in the second half to win going away 87-72.

Harvard visits UConn on Wednesday night, barring the weather.
