Hope everyone slept hearty after another Mardi Gras has come and gone for another year.
At Myrtle Beach on the campus of Coastal Carolina and their slight lack of lighting on the rafters, Keyon Johnson’s two consecutive three-point baskets with under 8 minutes to play broke a 51-51 tie to power Winthrop past the 2013 Big South tourney champions in Liberty, 77-65. Johnson led six Winthrop players in double figures with 15 points. On the other side, six seniors played in their final collegiate game for the Liberty Flames. But none showed more heart than four year guard John Caleb Sanders. He went 0 for 6 from the floor until he managed to scrape his way through the paint and convert a driving layup with 53 seconds to go for his only field goal. But he did get to the line a few times and made every attempt from the charity stripe.
As a matter of fact, the only reason why I felt typing this blog was necessary so early in the day was because of the free-throw shooting: Liberty went 12 for 13, but Winthrop did one better: a perfect 21 for 21. That is called getting it done!
Winthrop will play in the next round on Friday at noon against High Point.
Besides the Big South, the Patriot League also resumes with action tonight at campus sites–all games tipping off shortly after 7 p.m. Eastern time.
You might have to use the picture-in-picture feature if there is one available for all of these tournament games online tonight. We also have the NEC and OVC beginning their conference tournaments as well, with action aplenty throughout the night.
