What are the odds? Seriously?

With 1.4 seconds left in overtime, Dezzy Washington of St. Peter’s hit a 35 foot flailing three pointer to edge out Fairfield.  Two defenders were on him the whole time, but this was the same guy who hit game-winning threes in their two other prior meetings this season.

Hence, my blog headline tonight–What are the odds?

In the first round of the MAAC Tournament, anything can happen and probably did.

But to provide a sense of balance, Dunk City is back in the finals barely getting by East Tennessee State, 69-64.

Extra heaping of overtime, you may ask?  Sure, I’ll have another

T.J. Hallice did very little scoring during their Atlantic Sun semifinal, but in the final minute of the second overtime–Hallice came up huge with a steal and a reverse layup that probably would have made Bill Walton jealous (circa 1973-74).  Mercer survived an upset minded South Carolina Upstate squad 85-82 and will advance to Sunday afternoon’s title game in the Atlantic Sun against defending champion Florida Gulf Coast.

Both teams had the same 14-4 record in the conference, so it should be a wild affair on the Deuce.

In other conference tournament action…

WCC:  Loyola Marymount survived a back-and-forth affair against the Portland Pirates in Las Vegas 67-64.  Most of the 40 minutes, Portland led except for the waning minutes of both the first half and the second half, the one that counts the most.

The difference came from the free-throw line as the Lions emerged out of the shadows (Evan Painey led LMU in scoring with 19 points, including 7 of 14 shooting and a monstrous crazy dunk, and was a perfect 5 for 5 from the free-throw line).  Loyola Marymount earns a quarterfinal date on Saturday with second seeded Brigham Young, 5 p.m. Eastern time tip-off.

Wichita State resumes quest for perfect season in St. Louis

The Shockers kick off tournament play Friday at noon Eastern time in St. Louis at Arch Madness against 9th seeded Evansville, who beat 8 seed Drake 69-61.

Other tournaments kicking off on Friday include:

Colonial Athletic Association and Southern Conference.

Also, the Ivy League could be all wrapped up on NBC Sports Network as Harvard visits Yale.  Harvard is up two games on Yale entering this contest.

Other conferences continuing their tournaments include:

Big South, all games on ESPN3

Missouri Valley, all games on Fox Sports Midwest and select Comcast SportsNet affiliate stations

Ohio Valley, with both Belmont and Murray State seeing their first post-season action, on the OVC Digital Network
