Just over three days since North Carolina went into mourning over their most famous coach going to the heavens in Dean Smith, Las Vegas is the latest to join in the grieving stages.
UNLV’s most famous coach (and his funny antics on the sidelines) is gone.
Jerry Tarkanian (1930-2015) was battling some breathing problems and had a major infection. Before coaching the Runnin’ Rebels to four Final Four appearances (1977, 1987, 1991 the other years) and the 1990 National championship in the largest title game rout in history (103-73 over Duke on the same night that Brent Musburger did his final broadcast for CBS), he also made stops at Long Beach State and Fresno State. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013.
His biting of a towel will always be remembered. And yes, he and Bobby Knight used to always kid around during some speaking engagements…so went the reports before the Internet became the Internet.
