Mercer, IUPUI fall short in Southern and Summit Tourneys

Sunday night featured a few upsets yet again:

In the Southern Conference…

The 2014 Tournament darlings of Mercer will not be invited back again this year.  The 10 seed in the Furman Palamins had only 11 wins and 21 losses and managed to topple Mercer, 52-49.  This sets up a title game match with the top seed in Wofford, who cruised past Western Carolina, 73-61.

The CAA will have William & Mary taking on Northeastern, who edged out UNC Wilmington 78-71.  Yes, that game need only regulation time.

Other scores of note…

MAAC had top seed Iona win easily over Monmouth, 95-77 and their inner city rivals comprising the Jaspers of Manhattan will be their final opponent.  That final score was 65, St. Peter’s 48.

Finally, in the Summit League quarterfinals…

both Indiana entries were bounced as South Dakota got by Indiana-Purdue of Fort Wayne (IPFW) 82-73 and Oral Roberts squeaked out a close-shave 58-56 victory over IUPUI.  That game ended very strangely for the Jaguars, as they only scored an easy layup with one second left instead of going for the game-tying three.  Major mistake in game planning, that’s for sure.  South Dakota plays South Dakota State at 7 p.m., while ORU takes on North Dakota State in the other semifinal which should start around 9:30 p.m. or thereabouts.

Hopefully, everyone should get some much needed rest–myself included and I will be happy to provide the opening round schedule for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament, commonly known as the MEAC which begins on Monday.

I will also provide a brief glimpse into three more conference titles to be mostly seen on the ESPN family of networks (NBCSN will carry the CAA final).

Please have a good night, especially to the fans and supporters of all the bubble teams who carry out some realistic dreams that they might be dancing one week from now.
