Each of the higher seeds won–but Michigan State was pushed by Georgia in Charlotte. Same for Indiana in a high scoring 81-76 affair in the Omaha pod, and tiny Belmont nearly pulled the shocker of the day getting as close as 2 to Virginia but no more as the Cavaliers were simply too much on the rebounding end, eeking out a 79-67 win.
This sets up a rematch from a Sweet 16 encounter with Michigan State. Recall last year, the Spartans upset Virginia in New York. For Virginia, this is the first time since 1994-95 that they have won tournament games in successive years.
In other games…
Kansas easily outdistanced New Mexico State and West Virginia survived a very grueling test against Bobby Hurley and Buffalo (yes, they get my vote for the cutest uniforms–State University of New York at Buffalo–and don’t you forget it:).
As I typed this, the final Indiana entrant in this year’s field in Valparaiso is trying to overcome poor shooting and make Ginger Zee very happy in Columbus against Maryland.
In Seattle, Louisville is struggling to put away the UC Irvine Anteaters. Last check it was 35-33 Cardinals in front, with 17:23 remaining in the second half.
Another update to come tonight. See you then.
