Northern Iowa stuns Wichita State in OT

SONG SELECTION:

Passion Pit, “Take A Walk”

From the Gossamer album

Released July 24, 2012 from the Columbia Records label.

Both teams could not shoot the ball well on Saturday afternoon.

The Wichita State Shockers finished 2 of 24 from three-point territory and thanks to some excellent defense by Northern Iowa (sometimes triple teaming their key stars of Ron Baker and Fred Van Vleet), the Panthers upended the highly regarded Shockers 57-52 in the first semifinal of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament.

Wichita State did hold a slight edge in the rebounding department and turnovers were kept to a minimal, six for each side.  In a game like this, it is the team that does the little things which get magnified the most.

Northern Iowa advances to play once again for the MVC title game, Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. Eastern on CBS against the winner of the second seed from Evansville and the six seed representing Larry Bird’s alma mater in the Indiana State Sycamores.

Other tournament scores of interest

The Big South semifinals saw Winthrop get the better of Gardner-Webb 82-69, after both teams finished being tied up at 29 during halftime.  Their championship game opponent will be UNC Asheville, themselves a double digit winner earlier in the day.

In the Southern Conference, Western Carolina barely escaped Wofford 88-83 in double overtime.

In Detroit at the Horizon League, Wisconsin-Milwaukee breezed past Northern Kentucky 86-69 in opening round action.

The CAA had William & Mary get the better of James Madison 79-64.

The OVC title game and a possible clinching game for Yale is on the docket for tonight.  See you then.
