Ohio State Buckeyes, Big Ten Conference

Good Wins:  December 19 on neutral court vs. Kentucky and February 28 vs. Iowa.

Bad Losses:  December 1 vs. Virginia, December 12 at Connecticut, twice to Maryland, January 10 at Indiana, January 21 at Purdue, and February 4 at Wisconsin.

RPI Breakdown:  77 overall, 148 in non-conference play.

Brief Analysis:  Going 1-6 thus far against the RPI’s Top 25 and a rather paltry 3-9 against the RPI’s Top 100, their close shave win over Iowa last Sunday afternoon was a step in the right direction.  Being that this is the nation’s youngest team, a win over Michigan State on Saturday would be huge.  However, their overall record stands at 19-11 and they are definitely a classic bubble team in every sense of the word.  But of course, there is always that Big Ten postseason tournament next week on the horizon.  Bottom line, if the NCAA expanded the field to 128 schools, the Buckeyes would be one of the last teams to receive an invite.  But as it is, their Stock Up/Stock Down status is in as much flux as the nation’s wages and unemployment rate have been since 2013.

Percentage chance of reaching the Big Dance:  15 to 20 percent.

Monmouth Hawks, Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference

Good Wins:  Both on neutral courts November 26 vs. Notre Dame and November 29 vs. Southern California.

Bad Losses:  November 16 at USC, November 27 on neutral court vs. Dayton, December 4 at Canisius, December 28 at Army, and January 21 at Manhattan

RPI Breakdown:  53 overall, 32 in non-conference play.

Brief Analysis:  Even though Monmouth won 59-48 over the Rider Broncs in the MAAC Quarterfinals on Friday night, their lack of competition against the RPI’s Top 100 may hurt them in the end.  But this will all be a moot point if Monmouth somehow runs the table and wins the MAAC Tournament’s automatic berth next week.

Percentage chance of reaching the Big Dance:

Without the automatic bid, slim and none.  With the automatic bid, 100 percent.

A final edition of this series will come late next week when we know more about the true bubble teams that remain in fighting for those final coveted tournament berths.

Please enjoy the games this weekend, and thanks so much for finding me.  Please tell your friends and leave some comments by some blogs that you like.
