Thanks to 50 percent shooting and blistering defense, this is a major upset sure enough to shake up the brackets at least a little bit as Notre Dame upset Duke 84-79 in overtime in the second round of the ACC Tournament in Washington, D.C.
Duke blew an 18 point lead and only managed to shoot an anemic 25 for 73, good enough for only 34 percent shooting. The Fighting Irish were led by Zack Auguste’s 19 points to go along with 22 rebounds–one short of the all-time ACC Tournament record. Also sharing scoring honors for Mike Brey’s determined and gutsy crew was V.J. Beachem with 19 and Demetrius Jackson was close behind with 13 points.
For the Blue Devils, Grayson Allen led everyone with 27 while Brandon Ingram only managed 16 points on the day.
Next up for the Irish, another grudge match on Friday night at 7 p.m. on ESPN against the same team they beat a year ago to capture the ACC Tournament, the Tar Heels from North Carolina–who ran away in the second half and coasted to a decisive 88-71 win over Pittsburgh.
Enjoy the rest of your Thursday evening. I will chime in again if more upsets occur.
