The Mastodons played a spirited game Tuesday night inside a raucous Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. Indiana-Purdue of Fort Wayne used a Bryson Scott three, followed by a Brent Calhoun layup in jumping out to a 13-3 lead right out of the starting blocks.
And what would turn out to be ESPN’s SportsCenter Top Play of the Night was a dunk by John Konchar as Indiana continued to trail 32-23 with 5:45 left in the first half.
However, Indiana did not fold and remained close on a Josh Newkirk three with 2:10 left in the game. The game was tied at 65 heading into overtime, but it was all IPFW outscoring the Hoosiers 6-3 in the extra period. Over 12,000 screaming fans were overjoyed when the final inbounds pass was intercepted by Konchar as the Mastodons won for the first time in 15 tries over a ranked opponent (Indiana was ranked #3 entering the contest). The final score read 67-64 IPFW in overtime, and it marked Indiana’s fifth such occasion under Tom Crean’s leadership that the Hoosiers have lost to an unranked opponent. By comparison, Branch McCracken lost only four times and Bob Knight lost only three games to unranked opponents.
