The first major upset of the 2017 conference tournaments took place on Tuesday night as the 7 seed of Robert Morris (14-18) upset the second seed at Long Island University of Brooklyn 69-68.  The game winning shot happened with 3 seconds left as guard Kavon Stewart hit a soft floating jump shot in the middle of the lane.  He finished with 11 points on the night, while guard Matty McConnell led all scorers with 20 points.  LIU Brooklyn was led in scoring by Jashaun Agosto with 16.  Three other starters finished with 10 in a losing cause.  LIU Brooklyn is more than likely NIT bound finishing their season at 20-12.

The victory sends RMU to Mount St. Mary’s for a semifinal date on Saturday.  This game was, according to Matt Welch of DK Pittsburgh Sports on Twitter mentioned that Stewart would need only 12 points, one assist and 2 more steals to reach 1,000, 500 and 200 respectively for his career.

All of the other higher seeds won, with the biggest statement win was made by Albany who put up an even 100 against hapless Hartford in winning by 29 points.  Equally as impressive, but it ended up being a great margin of victory was in another America East quarterfinal as Vermont allowed 16 first half points to the Maine Black Bears.  The second half wasn’t that much different as the Catamounts creamed Maine to the tune of an easy 86-41 final score.

See you all tomorrow morning with brief capsule previews of three more conference tournaments–and yes, one tournament will have all of their games on television.  I will give out all those details leading off my next blog.  Please have a good night and try to stay warm.  I know I will.
