Late Wednesday afternoon under bright, sunny skies–huge gutsy winds over 65 MPH ripped several trees and downed scores of power lines around Detroit (and practically the whole Midwest for that matter–but lucky for me, my power stayed on).
Nearby at Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti, Michigan–the plane that was carrying a total of 109 people ranging from the players, the coaching staff and their families, band members, cheerleaders, and the WWJ radio crew came close to having a very scary moment. The plane ended up breaking through a nearby barbed wire fence before skidding off the runway. Thankfully, no one was injured and the plane did not get up in the air.
MLive.com and WWJ Television, the CBS affiliate in Detroit were reporting the same thing that ESPN did early in the evening. It appears the Wolverines will fly out of that same airport in the early morning and should still be able to play their second round match with Illinois at noon Eastern time from the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C., a game you can see on ESPN2.
It just goes to show you, sometimes mind over matter is best served with warm thoughts in mind. Hopefully, they will get to Washington safely as both the NTSB and the FAA are investigating this matter into exactly what went wrong.
